The Hesston Jazz Band performed at the 18th and Vine Jazz Festival in the historic jazz district in Kansas City.
All the other bands performing were from larger Kansas City area schools.
The band received a "1" rating (the best rating possible) and Jacob Penner (tenor sax) and Jon Geidel (drums) both received certificates for outstanding musicianship.
At the end of the festival, Penner took home the top award of "most outstanding soloist" for the entire festival.
Director Lyle Graverson said he was very proud of the students.
“This was a pretty incredible accomplishment considering all the soloists that performed today and the size of programs they were from,” he said.
Hesston’s performance made an impression on many of the judges and workers.
“Afterwards I was approached by several of the judges and festival workers who all asked "Now, where is Hesston?" and "How big of town is that?"” he said.
Graverson incouraged community members and students to reach out to Jazz Band members and congratulate them on their success.
“So if you see any of the jazz band members - especially Jacob - make sure you congratulate them for helping put our district on the map,”
