In her role as Miss Kansas Outstanding Teen, Paige Kauffman is hosting a book drive at Faith and Life Bookstore to benefit Children’s Miracle Network. The drive continues through Thursday, May 25.

The books will be donated to pediatric patients served by the Grant and Norma Davis Child Life Center and its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, both at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis.

Children’s Miracle Network is connected to the Miss America organization and has been a beneficiary of pageant participants and functions.

Kauffman said the book drive will benefit not only children receiving treatment, but will provide pick-me-ups to family members.

“I visited Wichita’s CMN Hospital, Via Christi, last August shortly after winning my title. Seeing the facilities firsthand where the children were staying made a lasting impact. Another point mentioned to my during my tour was the siblings of the patients. A lot of them struggle with feeling left out and understanding their brother or sister’s illness and why their parents aren’t paying as much attention to them.

“Some of the books being collected for the book drive will go towards the patients and others will be given to their siblings,” she said.

Kauffman said during the drive, she would like to collect 100 books for children and families.

“The drive lasts 10 days, so if we could get 10 books donated per day that would be awesome,” she said.

Kauffman said as a child, her favorite book, “Silly Sally” by Audrey Woods, was a source of comfort.

“When people donate to a cause, they want to have direct contact with those they are helping. While they might not be able to visit sick children in the hospital, this is a very easy way to directly change their life for the better through a small act of generosity,” she said.

Kauffman said as a young woman she has learned small steps can have a profound impact on one’s community.

“What people don’t see is how something as small as buying a book can make a huge difference in the joy and attitude of a child. Kindness and positivity can sometimes affect the recovery process more than treatment can,” she said.

Kauffman’s mother, Lynda Kauffman, has been an employee of Faith and Life for eight years and Faith and Life Bookstore Manager Bethany Martin has been a long-time family friend.

“ Aside from those connections, Faith and Life is a great asset within our community and loves to support local causes,” said Kauffman.

Faith and Life is promoting the book drive by offering 25 percent off books purchased for donation.  Faith and Life is also hosting a raffle for a $25 gift certificate and other prizes. One entry is granted for every book donated.

Books for children of all ages, children through young adult, may be donated for the drive.
